10. Lectio Divina Approach (Spiritual Reading)

1. Introduction

Lectio Divina (Latin for “Divine Reading”) is an ancient Christian practice of prayerful, meditative Scripture reading that moves beyond study into spiritual encounter with God. It originated in early monastic tradition and remains a powerful method for:

✔️ Deepening intimacy with God
✔️ Hearing His voice through His Word
✔️ Forming character and spiritual discernment

2. Purpose

  • To move from informational reading to transformational encounter
  • To slow down and let Scripture penetrate mind, heart, and soul
  • To foster contemplative prayer and listening

3. The Four Traditional Steps

Step 1. Lectio (Read)

  • Read the passage slowly and attentively.
  • Read it multiple times, aloud if possible.
  • Note words, phrases, or images that stand out.

Step 2. Meditatio (Meditate)

  • Reflect deeply on what stands out.
  • Ask:
    • What does this word or phrase mean spiritually?
    • How does it connect to my life or circumstances today?
  • Let it stir thoughts, emotions, memories, or convictions.

Step 3. Oratio (Pray)

  • Respond to God in prayer based on your meditation.
  • Confess, thank, praise, or petition as the Spirit leads.
  • Allow your prayer to flow from what God is revealing in His Word.

Step 4. Contemplatio (Contemplate)

  • Rest silently in God’s presence.
  • Allow His Word to settle in your heart without striving.
  • Simply be with Him, embracing His love and truth.

4. Modern Fifth Step (Optional)

Some traditions add Actio (Action):

  • What practical step or change is God calling me to make today based on this encounter?

5. Example Practice (John 15:5)

  1. Read: “I am the vine; you are the branches…” (read 3 times slowly)
  2. Meditate: Reflect on the imagery of vine and branches; dependence and life.
  3. Pray: “Lord, keep me abiding in you today. Forgive my self-reliance.”
  4. Contemplate: Sit silently, imagining resting connected to Christ, receiving His life.
  5. Act: Consciously pause throughout today to reaffirm dependence on Him.

6. Reading Tips

✅ Find a quiet, distraction-free space.
Slow down – this is not rushed study but spiritual listening.
✅ Use short passages (1–10 verses) for depth rather than breadth.
✅ Practice daily or weekly, integrating with other study methods.

7. Practical Application

Lectio Divina nurtures:

  • Deeper love for Scripture and God
  • Heightened spiritual awareness and discernment
  • A peaceful, prayer-centred life
  • The ability to hear God’s voice personally and live in obedient response
