Israel’s Kings & the Fall of Samaria

Category: Failure of covenant obedience

Could endure: Keep God’s commandments and lead the people in covenant faithfulness.
“The LORD warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: ‘Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees.’” (2 Kings 17:13)

Chose wrongly: Followed sins of Jeroboam, worshiped idols.
“They worshiped idols, though the LORD had said, ‘You shall not do this.’” (2 Kings 17:12)

Endured (negatively): Assyrian conquest and exile.

Ahaziah (King of Israel)

Category: Failure of trust in God

Could endure: Seek the LORD for healing and guidance.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart.” (Proverbs 3:5)

Chose wrongly: Sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub.
“Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.” (2 Kings 1:2)

Endured (negatively): Rebuke from Elijah, death without recovery.

Hezekiah’s Pride

Category: Failure of humility & wisdom

Could endure: Remain humble after God’s deliverance.
“In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death… but he prayed to the LORD, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign.” (2 Kings 20:1–6)

Chose wrongly: Showed Babylonian envoys all his treasures.

Manasseh (King of Judah)

Category: Failure of covenant leadership

Could endure: Follow David’s example in serving the LORD.
“As for you, if you walk before me faithfully… I will establish your royal throne.” (1 Kings 9:4–5)

Chose wrongly: Rebuilt high places, practiced sorcery, shed innocent blood.

Category: Failure of obedience & courage

Could endure: Submit to God’s word through Jeremiah and surrender to Babylon.

Chose wrongly: Rebelled against Babylon and ignored God’s prophet.
