Moses

Category: Faithful perseverance despite personal loss

Could avoid: Withdraw in bitterness after being told he would not enter the land.
“But because of you the LORD was angry with me and would not listen to me. ‘That is enough,’ the LORD said. ‘Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.’” (Deuteronomy 3:26)

Chose: Continued teaching and exhorting Israel until the end.
“Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all that the LORD had commanded him concerning them.” (Deuteronomy 1:3)

Category: Covenant renewal & national endurance

Could avoid: Follow the faithless pattern of their parents.

Joshua

Category: Courageous succession & leadership endurance

Could avoid: Shrink back from replacing Moses.
“The LORD said to Moses, ‘Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.’” (Numbers 27:18)

Chose: Accepted the charge to lead Israel.
