Israel’s Cycles of Apostasy

Category: Failure of covenant loyalty

Could endure: Remain faithful to the LORD after Joshua.
“Israel served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him.” (Judges 2:7)

Chose wrongly: Turned to idols and forsook the LORD.
“Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.” (Judges 2:11)

Samson’s Failures

Category: Failure of discipline & consecration

Could endure: Keep his Nazirite vow and live fully devoted to God.
“The boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb.” (Judges 13:5)

Chose wrongly: Broke vows, pursued foreign women, revealed his secret.

Micah’s Idol & the Danites

Category: Failure of pure worship

Could endure: Worship the LORD alone in His sanctuary.

Chose wrongly: Set up household idols and hired his own priest.
