Jesus (Yahshua)

1. Name / Role

Jesus (Jesus Christ / Yeshua / Messiah)

2. Category

Supernatural Beings

3. Time Period / Biblical Context

Jesus appears in the New Testament as the central figure of Christianity and is foreshadowed throughout the Old Testament. His earthly life spans the early first century AD, but He is portrayed in Scripture as eternal—present at creation, incarnate in time, and reigning eternally.

4. Origin / Background

Jesus of Nazareth was born of the Virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18–25; Luke 1:26–38). His name, Yeshua, means “Yahweh saves.” He is the promised Messiah (Christos in Greek), fulfilling Old Testament prophecies concerning the Redeemer. While fully human, He is also fully divine—the Son of God, the second Person of the Trinity, and the Word made flesh (John 1:1–14).

5. Primary Role / Function

Jesus functions as Saviour, Messiah, Teacher, Healer, Redeemer, High Priest, Mediator, Judge, and King of Kings. He came to reveal the Father, proclaim the Kingdom of God, fulfil the Law and the Prophets, die for the sins of the world, and rise again to conquer death. His role continues in His ascended glory as Head of the Church and returning Judge.

6. Key Characteristics / Traits

  • Fully divine and fully human
  • Sinless, compassionate, wise, and authoritative
  • Performed miracles and taught with unmatched authority
  • Embodied love, humility, righteousness, and truth
  • Obedient to the Father unto death and exalted above all (Philippians 2:5–11)

7. Symbolism / Spiritual Significance

Jesus symbolises divine love, redemptive fulfilment, and the perfect image of God. He is the new Adam, the true Israel, the Lamb of God, the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd, and the Light of the World. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He bridges the gap between God and humanity, inaugurating the new covenant and the Kingdom of God.

8. Notable Figures / Examples

  • Mary – His earthly mother, chosen by God
  • John the Baptist – Forerunner and baptiser of Jesus
  • The Twelve Apostles – Chosen disciples and witnesses of His ministry
  • Pontius Pilate – Roman governor who authorised His crucifixion
  • Paul the Apostle – Proclaimed Jesus as the risen Lord to the Gentiles

10. Summary / Reflection

Jesus Christ is the climax of the biblical story, the eternal Son of God who took on flesh to redeem humanity. In Him, God’s promises are fulfilled, God’s character is fully revealed, and salvation is made available to all. His life exemplifies perfect obedience, His death achieves atonement, and His resurrection secures victory over death. For believers, Jesus is not only Saviour and Lord but also the model of true humanity. He remains the central figure of Christian worship, the cornerstone of the Church, and the hope of eternal life.
