Title (1:1)

  • Introduction: The book begins by identifying Joel as the prophet and introduces the themes of the Lord’s judgment and future restoration.

Judah Experiences a Foretaste of the Day of the Lord (1:2—2:17)

  • A Call to Mourning and Prayer (1:2–14)
    • The Extent of the Devastation: The locust plague is described as a severe and overwhelming disaster that ravages the land.
    • The Response to the Plague: The people are called to mourn, repent, and seek the Lord’s mercy in light of the destruction they have experienced.
  • The Announcement of the Day of the Lord (1:15—2:11)
    • Imminent Judgment: The Day of the Lord is introduced as a day of darkness, devastation, and destruction. It is a time when God will execute judgment on the earth.

The Coming of the Day of the Lord (ch. 3)

  • The Nations Judged (3:1–16)
    • The Valley of Decision: God will gather all the nations in the valley of Jehoshaphat for judgment. The nations will be judged for their mistreatment of God’s people, Israel.
    • The Harvest of the Nations: God’s judgment will be like a harvest where the nations are reaped and cast into the winepress of His wrath. This section also emphasizes the judgment of those who scattered Israel and sold them into slavery.
  • God’s People Blessed (3:17–21)
    • The Blessing of Jerusalem: Jerusalem will become holy, and the surrounding nations will not invade it again. The Lord will dwell there with His people.
    • The Final Restoration: God promises to cleanse His people from their sins and to restore the land. His judgment on the nations will lead to the permanent peace and security of Israel.
