1. Name & Context
A desperate father brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus’ disciples, but they could not heal him. When Jesus arrived, the man turned to Him as the last hope. His heart was torn between belief in Jesus’ power and fear from long disappointment.
📖 Mark 9:17–18 (ESV)
“Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down… I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.”
2. How He Asked for Faith
📖 Mark 9:23–24
“Jesus said to him, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible for him who believes.’
Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, ‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’”
He did not demand a sign or proof — instead, he confessed his weakness. His plea “help my unbelief” was an open admission that faith must come from God.
3. How God Responded
Jesus did not rebuke the man’s weakness; instead, He honoured his honest prayer by healing the boy.
📖 Mark 9:25–27
“When Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit… And the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him… Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.”
God’s response shows that faith mixed with doubt is still acceptable when it turns toward Christ.
4. How He Received or Grew in Faith
Faith came through Jesus’ word and action. The father’s trust deepened when he witnessed divine authority firsthand.
Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
That word became alive in this encounter.
5. How Faith Was Tested or Refined
Before the miracle, the boy convulsed violently — a final, terrifying moment that could have destroyed the father’s fragile faith.
📖 Mark 9:26
“The spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him; and he became as one dead…”
For a moment, it looked like failure, not healing. His faith faced a final test — would he still trust Jesus?
Jesus then lifted the boy — turning apparent death into restoration.
Faith was refined in crisis.

8. Faith Insight / Lesson
The father’s story teaches that faith begins with honesty, not perfection.
He admitted both belief and unbelief — and that honesty became the bridge through which grace flowed.
God does not reject the trembling heart; He meets it where it confesses need.
Faith grows when we bring our doubts to Jesus rather than hide them.
This moment models “the prayer of faith” (James 5:15) — not because of strength in the believer, but because of the reliability of Christ.
