Your privacy
Lexnary is a community learning resource. We keep only what we need to run the dictionary, improve it, and keep accounts safe. We don’t sell or share your information, and we don’t show ads.
When you search or browse
For every page visit and search we record the date and time, the country your connection comes from, and a visitor code. The visitor code is scrambled from your internet address and changes every day, so we can count visitors without following anyone from day to day. We never store your internet (IP) address.
For searches we also record the word, the languages you chose, and whether anything was found. This shows us which words are missing from the dictionary.
Countries are looked up on our own server using the free DB-IP database; your address isn’t sent to another company for this.
Accounts
You don’t need an account: the whole dictionary is open to everyone. Only the dictionary team (reviewers, editors, and admins) has accounts, to sign in to the dashboard. For them we store a username, email address, name, role, and when they signed up and last signed in. Passwords are stored only in scrambled form (a salted hash), so nobody, including us, can read them. We record failed sign-in attempts (time and country) to spot password guessing.
If you submit a word or send a message
We store what you send, plus your name and email or phone if you give them. Your email or phone is visible only to our reviewers. If a word you submit is approved, it becomes part of the dictionary, shown with your name if you gave one.
If you leave an email address with a message, we send one automatic email to confirm we received it. We don’t add you to any mailing list.
Cookies
Visitors get no cookies. Team members signed in to the dashboard get the cookies needed to keep them signed in. There are no advertising or tracking cookies and no third-party analytics.
The site’s fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google when a page loads; Google can see your internet address for that request.
Who can see it
Only the dictionary’s reviewers and administrators, through the password-protected dashboard.
How long we keep it
Visit and search records are deleted automatically after about 13 months. Team accounts are kept until they are removed. Submitted words are kept as part of the dictionary’s review history.
Your choices
- Team members can change their name, email, or password under Account settings after signing in to the dashboard.
- To have a submission or message removed, or for any other question, use the contact form in Support the Project or Contact us.
